Cape Town Holi One Colour Festival

by Megan Diener in February 2013 - Miscellaneous

The Grande Parade, Cape Town, is having a make-over! It is with great anticipation that the people of Cape Town await the most colourful festival imaginable, playfully celebrating life through music, dance and…colour!

Inspired by the Hindu Holi Festival, which celebrates the death of Hiranyakashipu, King of the Demons, and marks the arrival of spring, the Holi One Festival is not a religious event and does not aim to promote any religious aspects or groups. Instead, the festival is about promoting the idea of togetherness, transcending backgrounds and cultures.

The first party was held in Berlin, Germany in July 2012, and started a landslide of excitement. Subsequent events were held in Dresden, Munich and Hannover rolling out thousands of enthusiastic revellers who as in the ancient Indian tradition, expressed themselves by throwing coloured powder in the air, and most especially at each other! The outcome is thousands of people covered in brilliant colours, looking the same, promoting the theme, "We Are All One.” Since then, it has quickly grown in popularity, with America and Singapore joining the happy throngs; and now South Africa will be included in the joyful rainbow event.

All that is required to experience the Holi One Colour Festival is to don your sparkling white outfit, arrive at the Grand Parade on the 2 March 2013, purchase your coloured powders, and share in the exuberance of the world’s biggest colour festival. Expect to be pummelled by bags of coloured powder while the crowd stomps to psychedelica and heavy electronica from a brilliant line-up of DJ acts.  Performance art and visual stimulation will add to the mix, while the air is filled with clouds of brightly-coloured powder at a countdown on the hour, every hour from 2pm to 10pm.

It is at this time during which mischievous behaviour is not only condoned, but encouraged. Let’s give the Grand Parade a make-over and paint the town red...and yellow...and green…and pink…and orange…and blue…and purple! All this against the backdrop of our beautiful Table Mountain!
