Stuck with a gift for dad this Father’s Day? Why not make dad’s favourite braai sauce and store it in decorative glass bottle.
Braai Sauce
What you need:
1 bottle barbecue sauce
¼ cup honey or brown sugar
1 tablespoon garlic
How to make it:
Put barbecue sauce, honey or brown sugar and garlic in a blender. Alternatively, mince the garlic by hand and whisk together.
Put all the ingredients in a jar and keep refrigerated until ready to use.
This makes enough sauce for about three braai sessions.
For some extra tangy flavour add:
2 tbsp butter
1/4 cup onion, minced
1 tbsp Green Bell Pepper, minced
1 cup water
1 cup tomato sauce
2 tbsp white vinegar
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp yellow mustard
1 tsp celery seeds
1 1/2 tbsp cornstarch
1 tbsp water
Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Then add the onions and peppers until tender.
Once tender, add the cup of water, the tomato sauce, white vinegar, seasoning, Worstershire sauce, lemon juice, mustard and celery seeds.
Simmer for 20 minutes.
To thicken, add the cornstarch and water to the mixture. Simmer until thickened.
Put the mixture in a jar and keep refrigerated until ready to use.
Braai Sauce Bottle
What you need:
Empty beer bottle
Wine cork
Transparent adhesive paper
Picture of you & dad
Small piece of fabric
How to make it:
Clean the beer bottle and fill with your special homemade braai sauce.
Cap the bottle with a wine cork.
Print and colour in a label and glue your picture on it.
Cut adhesive paper slightly bigger than the label. Remove protective paper from the adhesive paper and lay flat on table.
Turn the label upside down and place on adhesive paper. Press label on to bottle.
Cut a circle out of a piece of fabric and attach with a rubber band around the wine cork.
Adult supervision is needed especially when cooking over a hot stove and working with sharp objects such as glass.
