Calling all beach catamaran sailors! Get ready to set sail at Fish Hoek Beach Sailing and Surfski Club’s 19th annual Cape Point Challenge on Saturday 16 March.
“We are calling as many competent Hobie ‘or beach cat’ sailors to participate in this exclusive event, a highlight on the Hobie sailing calendar,” says Commodore, Caroline Hutchison.
The course traditionally starts in Fish Hoek Bay with the fleet sailing onwards past Roman Rock lighthouse (constructed in 1861). This is the only lighthouse in South Africa constructed on a single rock.
The course then continues parallel to the coastline to Miller’s Point and then on to Cape Point, before returning to Fish Hoek Beach. The race starts at 10am for the Hobie 14’s,16’s and Darts. The Hobie Tigers and Dragoons and
other very fast boats start an hour later at 11am.
This five to eight hour endurance event will test competitors’ sailing skills and patience to tactically get ahead of the fleet. Wind conditions can range from light breezes to big gusts.
Safety is a high priority for this event which is why Rescue 10 from Simon’s Town assists race officials with rescue duties.
Proceeds from entry fees are donated to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).
