Dancers Love Dogs

by Brigitte Reeve Taylor in May 2013 - Community Caring

After a stressful dog rescue, on the Cape Town highway, I decided I needed to combine my talent in the theatre
world with my compassion for animals. I have been in the Dance industry for 31 years and have produced many shows at the Baxter and Artscape Theatres, and so I used my contacts in the entertainment industry to collaborate for animals.

Our foundation is based on committed people in each centre of South Africa donating their time and talent to a show. This is a dance production where 100% of proceeds are used to assist animal organisations/groups in mass sterilization, paying the vets involved directly. These vets give us special welfare rates and on average we pay R250 per sterilization and often a little less for cats.

"It is a year in May since DancersDogs was founded. A year filled with hope, rich blessing and amazing support," says DancersDogs founder, Brigitte Reeve Taylor.

After our once-off show in Cape Town in May 2012, we went National! Durban and Johannesburg hosted a show in October 2012, and in January 2013, we staged our Pretoria DancersDogs production at the Atterbury Theatre. To date we have raised over R290 000 over four performances, and we have sterilized over 1300 animals, and still continue daily, to sterilize on this funding. We await the confirmation from Namibia, George, Bloemfontein and Port
Elizabeth, as to the dates they will be hosting their DancersDogs annual event to continue this work.

We have assisted animal rescue organisations in many other ways - by having kennels donated, obtaining food donations, seeking free veterinary care and working in the townships to help the animals in need. By helping these animals, we are also helping their less privileged owners.

Jim Cooney from Broadway Dance Centre, hosted his first class in New York City on the 7th January, of which all the proceeds will come to DancersDogs and Vivi Gold, who donated our logo photograph has pledged the donations from her USA site greatbarks.com to our foundation. From National to International!

This foundation will grow in strength every year, and we look forward to the Cape Town show, which will be staged at the Artscape Opera House on 25th May 2013. We will be hosting a variety of genres - Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop and Latin for your entertainment.

We rely solely on selling our shows to the public, and generating sponsorships and donations from the public and local business - let’s see Cape Town’s support!
